WWAED Proposed Category 2 Procedures
At the WWAED AGM on 20th March 2011 the members defined a set of category 2 procedures that we believe would be best for the welfare of the horse
WWAED Proposed Category 2 Procedures
The level of competency demonstrated by an equine dentist to pass the Level 2 Exemption exam should allow the practitioner to decide whether the procedure to be performed needs support from a more experienced individual, whether that is another qualified equine dentist or a veterinarian.
· Examination, evaluation and recording of dental abnormalities.
· Extraction of loose teeth (out of the mouth). This includes incisors and temporary cheek teeth or those suffering from advanced periodontal disease. Teeth loose by physical accidents should be further investigated by a veterinary surgeon before being removed.
· Extraction of first pre-molars or “wolf teeth”.
· Removal of dental overgrowths, without risking exposure of the pulp or adversely affecting mastication.
· Extraction of dental fragments and palliative rasping of fractured and adjacent teeth.
The procedures should be revisited every 5 years to ensure that all future advancements that are beneficial to the welfare of the horse are not excluded.
